On November 8th, 2016, the citizens of Lago Vista, Texas (in Travis County), voted 56% to 44% - a convincing 12-point margin - to KEEP THE LAGO VISTA LEG of the CapMetro Route 214 bus. Remaining unconvinced, the mayor of Lago Vista, Dale Mitchell, gave an interview to KVUE News on March 23rd, 2017, implying that his constituents didn't understand what they were voting for! He quickly recruited Republican State Representative Paul Workman to sponsor House Bill 2627, which would authorize Lago Vista to REPEAT THE DULY DEFEATED BALLOT MEASURE by circumventing the 5-year waiting period required by current Texas law for bringing up failed ballot initiatives in this case, with the hope that voters will finally end bus service for Lago residents. The bill was stalled in committee at the end of the last legislative session, but will almost certainly be reintroduced in 2018, unless Representative Workman is defeated at the ballot box.

There are many reasons why we believe that Lago Vista's leg of the CapMetro Route 214 bus should be preserved, but even citizens of Travis County who will NEVER ride the bus should be offended by this attempt to frustrate the will of the people, and we need your help! PLEASE CALL or e-mail (using your full street address, so he knows you are his constituent) Representative Workman's office staff and tell or write to whomever answers that you are opposed to H.B. 2627, and that you support continued access to Lago Vista through the Capital Metro Route 214 bus, which also connects with the Cypress Creek campus of Austin Community College in the North Austin area.

We have met a number of international sightseers and folks from this country who want to see the Hill Country when visiting Austin, so they catch the speedy and quiet MetroRail line at downtown Austin's 4th Street Station, and about 40 minutes later arrive at the Lakeline Station, where they can transfer to the Route 214 bus at no extra charge. The bus runs every hour and wends its way through the rolling hills west of Austin, circling Lago Vista at the end of the line in front of City Hall. If Mayor Mitchell spent his time and energy promoting a more vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene in his hometown, the tax base would grow without cutting services to vulnerable populations - like young students who don't drive, the poor, the elderly and the disabled - who currently rely on the bus and would be adversely impacted by its elimination or a reduction in service.

We believe that if Representative Workman hears from enough of his constituents in Travis County over the next two years, he may think twice about reintroducing such an undemocratic bill (in the apolitical "small-d" sense of the word) which seeks to overturn the will of the people. He represents the interests of ALL citizens of District 47, not just the narrow interests of Mayor Mitchell and the Lago Vista City Council. However, even if we do not succeed in discouraging Rep. Workman from bringing H.B. 2627 to the next legislative session's calendar, we plan to educate many more of Lago Vista's citizens about the true costs of ending their 30+ year link to the Capital Metropolitan mass transit system.
